This paper presents previously unpublished documents related to the foundation of ESTUDIOS DE HISTORIA NOVOHISPANA. The documents show how the creation of this journal contributed to the affirmation of the Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas of the National Autonomous University of Mexico during the mid 1960s. They also render a special perspective on the work methods of its first editor, Dr. Josefina Muriel.
