This study analyzes episcopal support for the settling of the Jesuits, Mercedarians, Discalced Franciscans and Discalced Carmelites in new towns and cities of New Spain to undermine the power and influence of the three foremost-mendicant orders: Franciscans, Augustinians and Dominicans. The relationship of these new orders with the bishopric is exemplified by the foundations made by the Discalced Carmelites in Puebla de los Angeles and Atlixco in the 1580s with the assistance provided by the bishop of Puebla, Diego Romano, to achieve such establishments, was notorious.
