Legal mobilization literature has relied on the concept of “master legal framework” to understand the definition of the rights-based demands of social movements. In the 21st century, Latin American LGBT movements presented rights-based strategies and discourses -legal framing- despite the lack of a master legal framework. Through the case study of the mobilization for the recognition of same-sex unions in Mexico City (2000-2006), this article aims to understand the process of defining the dispute for the LGBT movement. Comparison and interaction between LGBT and women’s movements allow for arguing that through “relational diffusion” activists have constructed a legal discourse and strategies. Using theoretical sampling, this research contributes to expanding the categories of analysis related to the legal definitions of Latin American LGBT movements, and in general, helps to reconsider the categories articulated to legal framing concept.
