JIMENEZ, Jenny Alexandra e PATARROYO, Santiago. Populism in Democratic Contexts in Latin America: Review of the Empty Signifiers in the Discourse of Three Populist Leaders. A Study from the Political Analysis of Discourse. Rev. mex. cienc. polít. soc [online]. 2019, vol.64, n.235, pp.255-287. ISSN 0185-1918. https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.2448492xe.2019.235.64566.
This work presents the outcomes of a research on how the empty signifiers that three Latin American populist leaders managed to hegemonize -Rafael Correa, Hugo Chávez and Álvaro Uribe- have been imbued with content. In order to bring this situation to light a critical analysis is made of their inaugural addresses in their first administrations, to identify the articulating axes of their political discourse. The theoretical-methodological approach that was used is political analysis of discourse, based on Mouffe and Laclau, from which an understanding of the political phenomenon of populism is possible. The analytical process is thus carried out, proving from the beginning the crossroads implied by a study of the political phenomenon in a context of capitalist democracy.
