Abstract

CONSTANTE LOPEZ, Alberto. From Refugees to Pariahs, in the Liquid Modernity. Rev. mex. cienc. polít. soc [online]. 2017, vol.62, n.230, pp.383-392. ISSN 0185-1918.

For Zygmunt Bauman the phenomenon of “wasted lives” is only a product of the project of modernity, of which this author was one of the greatest critics. While the discourse of modernity has varied, in Bauman’s view the fragmented and therefore precarious concept of “modernity” must then be reconstructed. The sharpening of the contradictions of the discourse of modernity is based on dramatic phenomena such as those of the displaced, the refugees, the miserable, and so on; that is, what Bauman called “human waste.”

Keywords : Zygmunt Bauman; refugees; displaced; misery; human waste.
