Abstract

POZAS HORCASITAS, Ricardo. A Place for the Masses: Public Ceremony and Political Rite. Rev. mex. cienc. polít. soc [online]. 2016, vol.61, n.226, pp.299-329. ISSN 0185-1918.  https://doi.org/10.1016/S0185-1918(16)30012-5.

This article analyzes the mass mobilizations that took place in the social space of the Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución de la Ciudad de México/Mexico City's Main Square) during the 1960s of the past century. Social and political change is shown by comparing the mobilizations of the social bases in support of the governments of Adolfo López Mateos and Gustavo Díaz Ordaz with emerging social movements of the middle classes which confronted the political regime of the Mexican Revolution demanding political democracy, an end to authoritarianism and to the corporate association of organized workers.

Keywords : Zócalo; Plaza de la Constitución; emerging social movements; base corporate mobilizations; Adolfo López Mateos; Gustavo Díaz Ordaz.
