ZEPEDA MARTINEZ, Roberto. Disminución de la tasa de trabajadores sindicalizados en México durante el periodo neoliberal. Rev. mex. cienc. polít. soc [online]. 2009, vol.51, n.207, pp.57-81. ISSN 0185-1918.

This article examines the dimensions of labour union decline in Mexico over the neoliberal period. The decline of labour unions is assessed considering two perspectives: the conversion of labour-state relations within a corporatist structure and its presence in the labour force, measured by union density rates, which is considered here as the percentage obtained out of the union membership and labour force. This article relied on previous research in the area in order to detect the levels of unionization in the country, but it conducted an original statistical analysis to determine union membership in 2008, relying on primary data provided by STPS and ISSSTE for detecting unionization in the private and public sectors, respectively. Union density reduced almost one fourth in the period 1993-2008. We found a decline of trade unions' influence in the political and labour spheres, mainly as a result of the advent of neoliberal globalization and the fracture of the corporatist pact.
