Resumen
SOTOMAYOR, Maritza. Measurement of Mexico's non-maquila intra-industry trade. Inv. Econ [online]. 2009, vol.68, n.268, pp.39-68. ISSN 0185-1667.
The purpose of this article is to measure the bilateral intra-industry trade (IIT) indices for the non-maquila industry of Mexico in context of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) from 1994 to 2006. In this work we insist on the significance of differentiating the maquiladora component from external trade flows, since the maquila trade corresponds to an interchange of goods in different stages of production, while the IIT has been analyzed and measured as the trade of goods that belong to the same stage of production. In addition, we estimate the marginal IIT indices to verify whether NAFTA has supported two-way trade. In that analysis, we offer an adjusted estimation of these indices, also taking into account the differentiation regarding their horizontal and vertical nature. Our results show that Mexican bilateral trade has been mainly of a vertical nature and has been concentrated in a small number of industrial sectors. This makes the expected positive effects in a trade integration context questionable.
