Abstract

TIRADO JIMENEZ, Ramón. Growth in Monetary Economies. A Review of some Central Results. Inv. Econ [online]. 2000, vol.60, n.231, pp.17-46. ISSN 0185-1667.

The principal aim of this article is to analyze some of the main results emerging from the theory of growth into which money is incorporated. This area of re search, which is relatively less well-known and less studied when compared to works linked to the real side of individual economies, is here reviewed, from the origins of the debate in the 1960s, up to recent contributions presented in the ambit of the theory of endogenous growth. Even in normative terms this theme is important, given that it offers a guide to the repercussions of monetary policy on the long-term performance of economies. One relevant conclusion drawn in this article is that very little is, in fact, known about the problem in theoretical terms. This is due to the fact that different results can be obtained simply by making some modifications to the base models. Research carried out to date is still very far from resolving the fundamental questions that guide its development.
