This article consists of a theoretical approach and the progress of the research project which aims to identify and analyze how music consumption is conditioned by entwined social categories such as social class, gender and ethnicity. This study is located in a youthful and multiethnic context -in the headquarters of the Intercultural University of Chiapas, located in San Cristobal de las Casas-. Through observation and interviews with active students from the university, the different social contexts from which these young people come from are evident. This is something that is not only reflected in their everyday relationships with the other young university students, but also in their cultural consumption of music. The discussion focuses on the importance of cultural and social capital in the training of music consumption, along with the sociocultural positions of the actors regarding the supply of entertainment based on the different combinations that exist between the elements of social class, gender and ethnicity.
