Abstract

BARTOLOME, Miguel Alberto. Las identidades imaginadas en Oaxaca: Algunos problemas del diálogo intercultural en una sociedad plural. Cuicuilco [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.60, pp.83-108. ISSN 0185-1659.

This essay aims to show that the indigenous cultures of Oaxaca are not only chronically impoverished, but are also poorly known and imagined, as they are subject to the projection of prejudices and fantasies from a non-indigenous society which lives with them in the context of an inter-ethnic process that has lasted for over five centuries. This society projects a generic form of "indigenous" much of which is now considered politically incorrect, such as sexism and gender violence, which was and is part of the unresolved contradiction of the national (Mexican) society. In a context of this nature, where one party neither knows nor imagines the other, it becomes very difficult to carry out an intercultural dialogue on equal terms.

Keywords : indianness; Oaxaca; ethnic relations; intercultural dialogue.
