RODRIGUEZ SORIANO, Roberto Israel. El esencialismo racial y el genocidio: El caso de Yugoslavia (Bosnia-Herzegovina). Cuicuilco [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.60, pp.45-66. ISSN 0185-1659.

Modernity assumed that the civilizing process would materialize only if the development of the body emerged as the foundation of being. Nowadays, the centrality of blood and land, when defining the spirituality of man, points toward racism. Following this logic, the human spirit provides him with allegiance through blood and land, thus, it is congruent to consider that both should organize themselves using consanguinity as a reference. When human groups define themselves and others, in terms of blood and land, they do so on the basis of racial criteria. From this phenomenon to genocide, there is only a very short step. This paper reflects on how essentialist ethnic identity processes can lead to genocide. The author provides an analysis regarding the specific case of genocide in Yugoslavia.

Palavras-chave : genocide; ethnic conflict; Identity; Yugoslavia; modernity.
