Abstract

SUAREZ, Hugo José. Cuatro rostros de la religiosidad popular urbana. Cuicuilco [online]. 2013, vol.20, n.57, pp.207-227. ISSN 0185-1659.

The article commences with the following question: In a context of religious diversity, what are the current faces of popular urban religiosity? Data are consulted to answer this question - data recently gathered in the framework of a larger research project - in which believers state the ways they build their religious meaning. Extracts from interviews are quoted, that portray four agents of popular religiosity: the pro-active, the re-creator-consumer, the semi-institutional and the para-ecclesiastical. The analysis of the texts endeavors to show the elasticity of popular religiosity and its new expressions in a contemporary urban context.

Keywords : popular religiosity; religion in Mexico; urban religiosities; religion and the city; religious transformation.
