TIRZO GOMEZ, Jorge. Ciudades modernas en México: espacios de la interculturalidad. Cuicuilco [online]. 2013, vol.20, n.56, pp.53-75. ISSN 0185-1659.
In Mexico, as in many parts of the world, large cities have become zones that bring persons from different cultures together. Economic factors are clearly important in this process but cities also concentrate education, science, bureaucracy, political power, art and entertainment. These relationships have generated intellectual discourse, in the context of modernity, neo-liberalism and globalization, while simultaneously expressing the meeting of cultural and critical differences in this situation. Inter-culturality is expressed in concrete spaces, which, although not free of conflict, are, nevertheless complex. Therefore, it is advisable to reflect on such questions as: What is the social space we have conceived in which inter-cultural relations are to take place? Are cities neutral social spaces or do they predispose residents to a given socio-cultural behavior? Are Latin American cities inter-cultural spaces or do they "simply" aspire to be cosmopolitan cities? By answering these questions, while simultaneously asking ourselves others, it becomes possible for us to construct inter-cultural proposals, which, in addition to promising idyllic futures, take daily realities and problems into account.
