RUIZ RODRIGUEZ, Carlos. En pos de África: el ensamble instrumental del fandango de artesa de la Costa Chica. Cuicuilco [online]. 2011, vol.18, n.51, pp.43-62. ISSN 0185-1659.
The present writing offers ethnomusicological reflections that try to contribute to discern the historical relation between African and Afromexican musical traditions. In specific, the argument concentrates in the instrumental ensemble of one of the more emblematic and representative musical traditions of the afrodescendant communities of "Costa Chica" region of Mexico, that is to say, the "Fandango de Artesa". First, the article offers a glance on the fandango de artesa and its musical instruments, then, outline a brief musical characterization of the Western Sudanic belt, emphasizing one of his representative instrumental ensembles. The description is followed of arguments that show to existing analogies between an ensemble of the region of Senegambia and those of fandango de artesa from Costa Chica, relation supported with historical data about the early Senegambian presence in New Spain and its possible incidence in the multicultural society of that time. Finally, the writing offers some reflections about transcultural processes on musical issues happened during long centuries of blending of what now is Mexican nation.
