To begin with, we discuss the abundance of definitions around the topic of use and abuse of drugs which have led to much confusion and consequently are important to make some distinctions. Also, contrary to what is thought, we assume that it is not true that the problem of drug consumption has become lately in the last years as a new society's problem derived from technological development and accelerated change in social, cultural an economic terms. If the problem is analyzed diachronically, it is easily observed that is an old problem. That is true, however is also a fact that incidence and prevalence have changed lately. Later on we discuss the typology of drugs and the role of anthropology in the study of this problem from the social and cultural point of view making special attention to the factors that motivate individuals to use drugs and the different forms and manners in which individuals use them. As an example of the latter, we exempliied with the case of alcohol consumption since is the worst drug problem all over the world. We also analyze some definitions concerning alcohol consumption, and make a profound analysis of the different cultural studies done to this point about it and what has been done in terms of social and cultural research, and what the surveys have to tell us about modes and manners of consumption as well as what can be done in the future to avoid these problems derived from alcohol and other drugs consumption. Finally we propose and integral and comprehensive analysis of the situation to encounter better solutions.
