Abstract
ARRIARAN CUELLAR, Samuel and HERNANDEZ ALVIDREZ, Elizabeth. El paradigma del multiculturalismo frente a la crisis de la educación intercultural. Cuicuilco [online]. 2010, vol.17, n.48, pp.87-105. ISSN 0185-1659.
This article analyzes the differences and similarities between the concepts of interculturality and multiculturalism. It discusses four theories: 1) a branch of cultural studies headed by Stuart Hall and others; 2) post-colonialism approach, with authors such as Homi K. Bhabha; 3) liberal theory, with authors such as Joseph Raz, Ernesto Garzón Valdés, and others; 4) and the comunitarian theory of Charles Taylor. Recent philosophical approaches concerning multiculturalism are also addressed. The main argument is that, contrary to what is commonly stated, we are witnessing a transition from the intercultural paradigm to multiculturalism. This is confirmed by recent events happened in countries such as Irak, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Afganistan. These events force us to rethink the issue of intercultural conflict, in general, and the failure of intercultural education, in particular. Such failure is the result of the lack of true discussion and intercultural dialogue, which would question the killings, tortures, displacements, and other violations to human rigths.
Keywords : multiculturalism; interculturality; education; Mexico; neoliberalism; globalization.
