The first sectión of this article addresses the emergence of intercultural education in Mexico, putting enphasis on the importance of original tongues for this new educational model. The second section deals with the Universidad Intercultural del Estado de Puebla (UIEP), describing its specific local context, finally, the third section describes the linguistic diversity of Mexico and reflects upon the use of original tongues in the UIEP.
