Abstract

ORTIZ LEROUX, Sergio. From pastoral power to power without shepherds. Towards a republican view of politics. Estud. polít. (Méx.) [online]. 2019, n.48, pp.95-114.  Epub June 04, 2020. ISSN 0185-1616.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.24484903e.2019.48.70422.

In this article the author present the hypothesis that the factum from the “pastoral power” metaphor may be played down by means of looking at it from a republican view. The idea is to place freedom -the central problem that gives meaning to politics- between shepherd and flock (i.e. the serfs). He think that after reading the works of political philosophers such as Hannah Arendt and Philip Pettit from a republican perspective, it is possible to recover alternative meanings of concepts like power and freedom. That is, meanings that do not stress the “serfdom” and “paternal sustenance” from serfs -as it is the case with pastoral power- but rather the political freedom of citizens, as well as the social preconditions to achieve it.

Keywords : Power; Pastoral Power; Republicanism; Politics; Freedom.
