This paper aims to address the issue and the debate on the notion of social innovation. Provides a review of recent literature, the most important elements of the debate and presents what is regarded as the key to distinguish social innovation from other types of social phenomena. For this it uses collective action as an analytical tool, and suggests a case study, in which these notions were applied.
