Quetzalcóatl, the supreme deity in Mesoamérica, is the essence of their cosmic consciousness. He has been profusely studied, in this article we just sketch some routes followed to explain his identity. As a universal symbol there are affinities in distant cultures, distant in time and space. In regards to his presence in Mesoamérica, we follow different approaches: one is the dualist conception wherefore Olmec religion, with its own vision in a hereafter and its corresponding practices are opposed to those of Quetzalcóalt cult. A complementary approach is to glance at the religious conflicts involved by the political struggles and the social changes through the history. Also mayan studies, specially on religion and deities, either in iconography or through mythology have been found worthy to discover some inner contents or meanings of Quetzalcóalt.
