The author analyses the wearing away process of the workers sector inside the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and also in Mexico's political system. In the first part the internal fights for directive positions and for political candidacies are analyzed, as well as the workers sector contribution to support the PRI's actions; the meaning of its leaders practices in the national Parliament, and their relations with the Federal Government. In the second part the analysis delves into the functions performed by the workers sector in several public institutions, due to its influence in Mexico's economic and labor policies, as well as the arrangements made by union leaders -as labor middlemen- for the legitimation of their actions in front of their supporters. In addition, the strategic role played by this sector in order to help the Government to surpass the etTect of the economic recession, conditioning their support to measures of economic policy.
