TROYA, María Fernanda. "Seeing is Believing": Christianity, Photography and Propaganda. The Case of the Salesian Mission of Mendez in Ecuadorian Amazonia (1920-1940). An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2022, vol.44, n.120, pp.215-247. Epub 31-Out-2022. ISSN 0185-1276. https://doi.org/10.22201/iie.18703062e.2022.120.2777.
The case studied -the use of photographs representing the Shuar people of Ecuador taken by the Salesian order of Don Bosco for propaganda purposes during the first decades of the twentieth century- has allowed us to search into the fundamental relationship between word and image, one of the key discussions in the field of the anthropology of images. I examine this relation by reviewing Hans Belting's work and its intersection with the philosophical reflections of Marie-José Mondzain and Jacques Rancière. The work of these authors is situated in a vast field in which the debate about the "division" of the visible, for the former, and the "division" of the sensible, for the latter, facilitates a philosophical and critical comprehension of a certain "political economy" of the images, a subject that I treat also through Serge Gruzinski's theory.
