ONTIVEROS VALDES, Constanza. Carriages and the Confraternities of the Blessed Sacrament in New Spain: the Carriage Housed in Casa de Morelos, Morelia. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2022, vol.44, n.120, pp.155-189.  Epub 31-Out-2022. ISSN 0185-1276.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iie.18703062e.2022.120.2774.

In New Spain carriages were a sign of social distinction and from the late seventeenth century on were linked to liturgical ceremonies. Among other uses, the Blessed Sacrament confraternities used carriages to transport the priest who carried the viaticum and they were placed at the end of other processions associated with the Eucharist. Although their use was frequent, few viceregal carriages from New Spain decorated with Eucharistic motifs have survived the passage of time. Among them stands the coach found in the Museo de Sitio Casa of Morelos, in Morelia (dating from the first quarter of the nineteenth century). The article explores the functions and symbolism belonging to this sumptuary object, understood as an artistic element that acquired additional layers of meaning due to its immersion in a ritual context, and which converged affiliations, identities, and hierarchies when in use.

Palavras-chave : Carriages of New Spain; sacramental fraternities; transport and accompaniment of the viaticum; travelling artists; cult of the Eucharist.
