VELAZQUEZ GUADARRAMA, Angélica. Portrait and Bourgeois Identity. Pelegrín Clavé and Édouard Pingret in Mexico, 1850-1851. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2022, vol.44, n.120, pp.9-38.  Epub 31-Out-2022. ISSN 0185-1276.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iie.18703062e.2022.120.2785.

Since his arrival in Mexico in 1846, Pelegrín Clavé became the most requested portraitist among Mexico City's elite, his fame narrowly overshadowed by the presence of the French artist Édouard Pingret in the capital, between 1851 and 1855. This paper addresses the genre of the portrait as one of the most successful political operations spearheaded by the business class to achieve an image of social distinction and class identity in the frantic political context of the decade of 1850.

Likewise, the article explores the different plastic strategies that these two painters employed to position themselves as portraitists, satisfy their professional and economic ambitions, and respond to the demands of a clientele eager to increase their social and cultural influence through its connection with art and with the Academia de San Carlos. It focuses on the analysis of the portraits of two of the most prominent businessmen of the period: Cayetano Rubio and Eustaquio Barron, the first painted by Clavé in 1850 and the latter by Pingret in 1851.
