LEON MARISCAL, Beatriz Berndt. Everything Emanates from his Person, in the Image of the Sovereign: Insights on one Portrait of the Viceroy the Duke of Linares. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2011, vol.33, n.99, pp.181-235. ISSN 0185-1276.
The basic aim of this article is to contribute to reflection on the political nature of certain images in New Spain, taking as its example a portrait of Viceroy Don Fernando de Alencastre Noroña y Silva, second Duke of Linares (1661-1717), painted by Juan Rodríguez Juárez (1675-1728). One result of the research was the documentation of the painting's original home in the friary of San Sebastián in Mexico City, as well as the identification of other paintings and written testimonies portraying the second Duke of Linares as a man of liberal personality offering a moral example linked to his political activities. By disseminating his faculties as a governor, along with his ethical qualities and his acts of patronage, the Novo-Hispanic image played a significant role by propagating ideas or values pertaining to the Viceroy or the Monarchy he served.
