The first decades of the twentieth century were witness to a surprising flowering of the ballet. The aesthetic statement of Diaghilev and the repeated visits to Spain of Russian Ballet companies in the First World War period and later awoke considerable interest among musicians, artists and writers. The example set by Stravinsky and the route traced by Manuel de Falla were among the factors that determined a notable change of direction in Spanish stage productions. This was the background against which the ballet Don Lindo de Almería appeared, composed by Rodolfo Halffter to a libretto by José Bergamín. The article explores the circumstance that surrounded the genesis and reception of this work in its symphonic and ballet versions, and examines some of the compositional resources employed by Halffter in this work. It also considers the implications of the ballet's staging in Mexico which marked the arrival of these two notable exiles in this country following the defeat of the Spanish Second Republic.
