Abstract

MORENO SILVA, Désirée. La infortunada recepción de un emblema en el siglo XVIII. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2003, vol.25, n.83, pp.55-75. ISSN 0185-1276.

Elements of neo-Stoic moral philosophy, captured in emblematic form, exercised considerable influence on the culture of the New Spain in as late as the mid eighteenth century. The dissemination of these ideas has been traced in various elements of domestic furniture, specially in folding screens known as biombos. This article suggests that another space was used to develop this kind of moral reflection: a wine-shop ceiling. Research is based upon an accusation made before the Inquisition, and envolves the analysis of an emblematic message, its reading and reception.
