Resumen

TAPIA HERNANDEZ, Edgar; GARCIA CARRERA, Jesús Salvador  y  DEL RINCON DE LA MACORRA, Alejandro. Parametric study of the inelastic model of steel braces. Ing. sísm [online]. 2016, n.94, pp.49-74. ISSN 0185-092X.

Optimal modeling approaches of steel braces are evaluated in this paper in a parametric study through the influence of the transversal discretization, the number of sub-elements, geometrical imperfections at the mid-span, gusset plate models, integration points, fatigue and strain hardening of the material. Pushover and nonlinear time-history analyses were performed using OpenSees software. Pushover analyses were carried out in order to study the axial capacity of the brace element under a monotonically increasing compression load. The hysteretic response was evaluated by nonlinear dynamic analysis of a frame designed by capacity. Based on the results, recommendations were established in order to obtain consistent results between the analytical model and the typical response of brace elements. The influence of the slenderness ratio in the response of the models is also discussed. In addition, a factor is proposed for a more realistic assessment of the material overstrength for the specific conditions of the Mexican market. The factor depends on the structural cross-section and type of steel, and it was developed through a statistical study of 1,756 certified laboratory coupon tests of steel samples.
