This paper presents an approximate procedure for the practical calculation of the seismic response of light resonant building components. The mechanical systems composed by the components and the host structures are presumed to be elastic and classically damped, such that a traditional modal analysis can be carried out. Intended to estimate the upper limit of the response, the procedure assumes that the component is tuned to a building mode, its interaction with the other modes of the host building being ignored. The correlation of the two closely spaced modes resulting from the dynamics of the component-resonant building mode system is accounted for. Comparison of the results predicted by the approximate procedure of this paper, and some numerical applications, corroborates that the procedure is successful in predicting the response of the components when they are tuned to low order modes of the host structure. However, as also seen, the procedure its inappropriate to calculate the response of the components when the tuning of these involves higher modes of the host structure.
