This article presents the ethnographic experience and methodological problems that the author faced as UN special rapporteur for the human rights of indigenous peoples. The objective of this mandate was to study the human rights violations of these peoples through field visits in various countries, select interviews with government officials and experts, the use of documents, all of which had to be summarized and presented before the various specialized bodies of the United Nations with recommendations to governments and other actors.
