This article analyzes how Mexican anthropology has constructed a "proper profile" according to its relationship with the State, nationalism, its applied vocation, and pro-Indigenous and Mesoamerican "paradigms." It also explores how this profile has been transformed in recent years, within a context of crisis in the State, nationalism, "academization" of this discipline, and a methodological, theoretical and epistemological twist surrounding the decolonization of knowledge. In this diachronic analysis of the history of Mexican social anthropology, the author questions the reflection on anthropologies from the south in an emergency scenario; moving on to the discussion of the "breakdown" of distinctive paradigms in Mexican anthropology, and finally, its latest social and theoretical developments. It concludes with a reflection on some theoretical and practical problems that the discipline faces nowadays.
