Abstract

DIAZ ALVAREZ, Ana. Venus beyond astronomical tables: A rereading of Codex Borgia 53-54. Estud. cult. náhuatl [online]. 2014, vol.48, pp.89-128. ISSN 0071-1675.

This article has two objectives: to analyze the sheets 53 and 54 of the Codex Borgia and review the arguments offered by Eduard Seler in his classic 1898 article, in which he interprets that section as a table of Venus (Seler 1904 [1898]). My intention is to reflect on how the study of Seler has conditioned the subsequent understanding of those sheets from the canons of modern scientific epistemology and approaches of the late nineteenth century on the ancient religions. As I discuss in this paper, Seler had to make some omissions and emendations to these primary sources in order to support a plausible model with their intellectual interests.

Keywords : Codex Borgia (pages 53-54); Venus almanac; Eduard Seler; Mesoamerican calendars; tonalamatl.
