A synthesis of the species richness and geographical distribution of carabid beetles from the State of Hidalgo, Mexico, is presented, elaborated by reviewing specimens from three national and one foreign collections, exhaustive review of published literature, two thesis works and the data base review of four entomological collections. A total of 134 species of carabids (including five morphospecies) are recognized, classified in nine subfamilies, 26 tribes and 52 genera, of which 50 species are first state records, additionally new distribution data within the state for 10 species are presented. 39.5% of the total species have a distribution restricted to Mexico. The municipality with the highest number of species is Zimapán. The main proportion of species occurs in pine and pine-oak forests, and at elevations above 2,000 m. The biogeographic province with the highest number of species is the Sierra Madre Oriental; however, sampling is still needed in other important areas of the state. This work is the first inventory of carabids in the entity and aims to serve as a basis for future studies in taxonomic, ecological, conservation, and biogeographical approaches to these beetles in Hidalgo State and Mexico.
