This paper aims at describing the recent evolution of legal aid schemes in some of the most relevant examples that have been an important reference to the advance of legal aid in occidental culture. This paper puts forward a specific question: are we going in the right direction towards an improvement of legal aid, or are we rather returning to charitable schemes? In order to answer to this question, this research analyses the ideological evolution of legal aid related to the Welfare State; identifies the principal factors that might impact this evolution; and examines some representative case-studies that demonstrate the transformation of legal aid.
