In this essay, the author analyzes the rules concerning criminal sanctions that are substitutes for imprisonment penalties, as well as the rules on the reparation of damages, established by the new Criminal Code of the Federal District of 2002. It starts with a historical review of the latter, examining the corresponding rules of the federal and the Federal District's criminal codes, and the reforms of 1983, 1991, 1993, 1996 and 1999. Moreover, he draws a general framework to explain criminal sanctions that are substitutes for imprisonment, and examines the advantages and disadvantages derived from the qualitative and quantitative requirements needed to make possible the substitution, according to the rules of the Criminal Code of the Federal District of 2002. Finally, the author analyzes the monetary sanctions established in the new Criminal Code of the Federal District, such as the so called ''reparation of damage'' and the ''economic sanction''.
