ZOTES-VALDIVIA, Víctor Hugo et al. Surgical treatment of pulmonary aspergilloma: 10 years experience in the National Institute for Respiratory Diseases. Neumol. cir. torax [online]. 2015, vol.74, n.4, pp.240-246. ISSN 0028-3746.

Pulmonary aspergilloma is a rare condition characterized by invasion on lung cavities with Aspergillus fumigatus. Surgical treatment involves a significant morbidity and mortality as well as being controversial and challenging. The aim of this study is to evaluate the surgical management of aspergilloma in our institute. A retrospective review of medical records was performed from 2003 to 2013. Demographic data and results of surgical treatment are analyzed. A total of 35 files were reviewed, and were included 22. 54.5% (n = 12) were female and 45.5% (n = 10) male. The average age was 55. Pulmonary tuberculosis was documented in 54.5% (n = 12). The most common presenting symptom was hemoptysis (18 patients, 81.8%). The most frequent location was in both upper lobes, 45.5% (n = 10). 77.7% (n = 14) was performed lobectomy. The percentage of intraoperative complications was 11.1% (n = 2). Four patients (22.2%) had some postoperative complication and one of them death (5.6% mortality). Surgery as treatment of aspergilloma in our institute has proven safe and effective, achieving favorable results with acceptable morbidity and postoperative mortality in relation to other publications. A more extensive review is required to improve and optimize sample size of the study.
