Educational and psychological interventions are included to promote better asthma control. Recently, one of the most important psychological construct is illness perception, which is related to treatment adherence, disease control and emotional impact. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between illness perception, depression, anxiety and disease control in asthma patients. A correlational cross-sectional study involving 45 patients who were evaluated on illness perception, depression, anxiety and asthma control was performed. Most patients reported that the disease severely affected his (her) life and mood. More than 50% of the patients were moderate to severely depressed, 75% had moderate to severe anxiety. Statistically significant correlations between depression and anxiety, anxiety and asthma control, impact of illness, depression and anxiety, perception of disease control and anxiety and perceived emotional impact of illness, depression and anxiety were found. We conclude that the results lead patients to perceive a relationship between disease symptoms, depression, anxiety and asthma control.
