Abstract

MARTINEZ BARBOSA, María Xóchitl  and  LUNA MARTINEZ, Janeth. Living history pages. The Department of History and Philosophy of Medicine through the documents of the Historical Archive. Rev. Fac. Med. (Méx.) [online]. 2017, vol.60, n.2, pp.24-34. ISSN 2448-4865.

The Department of History and Philosophy of Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM was established in the mid-twentieth century as a space dedicated to medical huanities, with the main objective of improving their cultural background and preparation of the students. Dr. Francisco Fernandez del Castillo founded the Department during the administration of Dr. Raoul Fournier as Faculty's Dean. Among its main objectives, Fernandez del Castillo proposed to build a fund of documentary and bibliographic information and start the Museum of Medical History project. He implemented regularization and writing courses, as well as a course of the History and Philosophy of Medicine, which would follow the trend of other countries that included it in their programs. Also, the Department became involved with the project “Anthropological and Social Information Service for Interns”, an option that would help students adequately comply with their social service in rural areas. At 60 years from the founding this department, through the investigation of documents that are guarded at the Historical Archive of the Faculty of Medicine, we recall some foundational aspects from its origin.
