CONNAUGHTON, Brian. Miracles: eagerly awaited, celebrated, monitored and questioned. From New Spain to Mexico, sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. Sig. his [online]. 2018, vol.20, n.40, pp.42-107.  Epub 03-Ago-2020. ISSN 1665-4420.

This study addresses the long tradition of miracles and their meanings for the faithful in the history of New Spain and independent Mexico. It analyzes both the desire for miracles in abundance, and the fears and criticisms surrounding possible abuses. For a long time, the considerations and debates in this matter remained largely within the domain of the clergy. From the beginning of the 19th century, however, in Spain and New Spain, criticism of miracles arose amid discussions of rationality and a new liberal politics. This fueled the inclusion of the discussion of miracles within a complex civic-religious controversy.
