Prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) and its analogues were used to synchronize estrus in European race sheep, by applying two injections with intervals of 7 to 11 d. The response to these protocols in hair sheep is not clear. With the objective of evaluating two short synchronization protocols with PGF2α in 20 cyclic hair sheep, (3.5±1.0 years of age and body weight of 37.8± 3.0 kg), one of two treatments were assigned randomly: 1) IM application of two injections of PGF2α (cloprostenol, 500 μg per dosis) with an eight-day interval, and 2) application of four IM injections of PGF2α (cloprostenol, 500 μg per dosis), two on day 0, every 8 h and two on day 8 with an 8 h interval. The experimental design was completely random with two treatments and 10 repetitions; the experimental unit was one sheep. The percentage of sheep in estrus was similar (p>0.05) between groups (90 to 100 %, treatments 1 and 2). There was no difference (p>0.05) between groups in the interval at the end of the treatment and the estrus (34.4 ±4.9 h and 34.8 ± 3.7 h, treatments 1 and 2); the length of the estrus was longer (p≤0.05) in treatment 2 (49 ±4.4 h) as compared to treatment 1 (35 ±4.2 h). The preovulatory peak of LH occurred between 10 h (treatment 2) and 11 h (treatment 1) (p>0.05) after the beginning of the estrus. The application of two to four injections of PGF2α with an interval of 8 d, in cyclic hair sheep, is effective in synchronization programs in the tropics.
