POMPA-GARCIA, Marín  e  CAMARERO-MARTINEZ, J. Julio. Dendroclimatic potential of earlywood and latewood in Pinus cooperi Blanco. Agrociencia [online]. 2015, vol.49, n.2, pp.177-187. ISSN 2521-9766.

Intra-annual variation of the growth ring contains seasonal climate signals that represent valuable records of paleoclimatology and can help better understand tree response mechanisms. The objective of this study was to model the response of earlywood (EW) and latewood (LW) to climatic variables in Pinus cooperi Blanco. Using dendrochronological series of EW and LW, correlation analyses were established with monthly instrumental registers of precipitation (P), maximum temperature (Tmax), mean temperature (Tmed), minimum temperature (Tmin) and large-scale atmospheric teleconnections expressed by the Multivariate "El Niño" Southern Oscillation Index (ENSO-MEI) for the period 1964-2020. Earlywood and latewood had different significant correlations. Earlywood is more sensitive to winter rains before the growing season. Latewood was better associated to the ENSO-MEI values. This difference in the response of the two types of wood represents the dendroclimatic potential of P. cooperi, which has implications in the face of local climatic variables.

Palavras-chave : Pinus cooperi; radial increment; climate-tree relationships; dendrochronology; earlywood; latewood.
