VAZQUEZ-ALVARADO, Jorge M. Paulino; BARBOZA-CARRASCO, Irene  e  MATUS-GARDEA, J. Arturo. Multiplying effect of remittances on the mexican economy. Agrociencia [online]. 2008, vol.42, n.8, pp.939-947. ISSN 2521-9766.

Migrant remittances are a major source of foreign currency for developing countries, and their effects on the principal macroeconomic variables should be measured to implement appropriate policies to maximize their benefits. Mexico is the second largest receiver of remittances in the world. In 2004, the 16,613 million dollars received accounted for 2.5% of the GDP, equivalent to 99.9% of direct foreign investments, and 75% of the income from oil. Because of the potential benefit they represent for the country, this study was conducted to determine the effect of remittances on the Mexican economy and the path of this effect from its origin to its destination. With structural path analysis it was found that remittances have a multiplying effect on the domestic economy of 8.21, and that remittances affect mainly the agricultural sector. The effect in this sector is not direct, but through paths that begin in households receiving the remittances; thus, the effect is different according to the characteristics of the household.

Palavras-chave : Accounting multipliers; general equilibrium models; structural path analysis.
