This article is a study of the Brazilian industrialization. It explores and interprets the emergence, development and decline of two enterprises of the pharmaceutical industry -Laboratório Paulista de Biologia and Instituto Pinheiros. The pharmaceutical industry is related to biomedical science and research and the sources of growth include diversification of products and the interactions between the pharmaceutical firms and public health institutes-Instituto Butantan, Instituto Biológico and Instituto Pasteur.
