IBARRA DERAS, Mauricio  e  BECERRIL SANCHEZ, Teresa. Railways and the Transformation of the Outskirts of Mexico City from the Second Half of the 19th Century Onwards. Secuencia [online]. 2022, n.113, e1860.  Epub 02-Maio-2022. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i113.1860.

This article analyzes one of the aspects of the initial expansion of Mexico city, focusing on the dynamics of interaction that took place from the mid-19th century onwards with the emergence of the first “extra-mural” settlements, established in the nearby urban periphery, next to the city’s railway stations. The exploration of the link that arose between stations and new settlements is not only expected to corroborate what various sources have declared regarding the fact that “railways and their stations served to guide the urban growth of the city.” It will also show that this relationship was not the result of chance, but that there are underlying reasons explaining this interaction, which must be explored to contribute to a better understanding of the origins of contemporary Mexico city.

Palavras-chave : railways; new settlements; periphery; Mexico city; 19th century.
