HERRERO, Alejandro. Does the Argentinian Nation Exist? Case Study of the Armed Conflict at Corrientes, Paraguay, Buenos Aires (1839-1847). Secuencia [online]. 2015, n.91, pp.127-148. ISSN 2395-8464.

Recent decades have seen a debate regarding national origins, from a perspective that addresses the construction of both States and nations, questioning historiographical accounts that assumed that nations were a given. For South American cases, for example, some historians chart their emergence in the colony and others after the revolution and independence. In the historiography of Argentina, the pioneering work of Oscar Oszlak and José Carlos Chiaramonte began to review those historiographical images. This article, fully in line with those pioneers and in particular with those of Chiaramonte, makes further advances in this perspective, by examining a case study: the war of the governments of Corrientes and Paraguay against the Buenos Aires government (1839-1847).The war was the backdrop to a deliberate discussion on the existence of an Argentinian nation. The main purpose of analyzing this case and specific debate is to review the idea of an Argentinian nation perceived as a given fact rather than a construction associated with political decisions; and perceived as the only possibility rather than as just another option for the various provinces of the former viceroyalty of Río de la Plata.
