The article presents a critical review of the contributions from various genres and disciplines, produced between 1920 and 2000, that have used the expression generación del 80 to reflect on the shift from the 19th to the 20th century in Argentinean history and the main problems associated with the formation of the state and the nation. It focuses on the construction of the label generación del 80 in the 1920s and its longterm variations. The main aim is to show the transformations in the representations of the historical role of a group of politicians and intellectuals regarding key processes in the development of Argentina as a modern nation. With these objectives in mind, the author proposes an original periodization enabling one to see the modifications in the generación del 80 label and the contents and characteristics associated with it. At the same rime, the arricie describes the historiographic contexts of production of the contributions analyzed and presents reflections on the forms of approaching key historical pro cesses in Argentinean historiography.
