VELASCO DOMINGUEZ, María de Lourdes. Feminist debates around feminicide violence and criminal law in Mexico. La ventana [online]. 2023, vol.7, n.58, pp.49-82. Epub 28-Ago-2023. ISSN 1405-9436. https://doi.org/10.32870/lv.v7i58.7742.
As of 2007, a policy of militarization of public security known as “the war on drug trafficking” has been established in Mexico, which included strengthening the punitive power of the state to confront gender violence and crimes related to drug trafficking. In this context, the violent deaths of women have increased. While in 2014, there were 6 murders of women daily around the country, in 2018 and 2019, the figure rose to 10 murders daily. To try to understand this context of violence, and its link with criminal law and punitive policies, several groups of feminist researchers have developed innovative theories and investigations. The article aims to analyze the academic production of four contemporary feminist expressions, to account for their conceptions of sex and gender, their interpretive frameworks of gender violence and criminal law, the main causal factors to explain this violence, and their political proposals. Through this analysis, I hope to build bridges between various feminisms and to open new points of debate on the scope and limits of criminal law in its approach to femicide violence.
