Ingestion of caustic substances remains a serious medical social problem; prevention of this accident is essential to avoid injuries and sequelae in the digestive tract and the oral cavity. The injuries caused by caustic substances are classified from a histological view, similarly to skin burns. In general, there is a relationship between the degree of depth of the lesion, endoscopic findings and prognosis. The following points should take into account: location, extension and severity of lesions which depends on many factors related to the caustic; there fore it is very important to identify: the type of caustic, the properties, the concentration, the amount consumed, the time since the ingestion, if you have actions taken to neutralize the noxious effect, that can add a thermal injury, and the voluntary intake or not. The aim of this article is to establish at the National Institute of Pediatrics the classification given to the oral injuries and their rehabilitation in order to prevent sequelae that limit function, alter esthetics and appropriate growth and development orofacial characteristics of patients.
