This article presents a study carried out on the famine suffered by a large proportion of the inhabitants of New Spain between 1785 and 1787, based on a review of, and the systematization of, the summaries of 122 files included in an Electronic Guide from the General Archive of the Nation (agn). These documents contain the requests for the relief of tributes, sent by the authorities of several Indian republics, to the viceroy and the Royal Court, throughout those diffi- cult years. Using the information from the agn, enriched by the results of other investigations, the geographical scope of the loss of the maize harvest in the viceroyalty is reconstructed in a spatial manner, with the aim of contributing to the historical study of climate change
